Trolltunga — the "Troll's Tongue" — is the sliver of rock that juts horizontally into thin air 700 metres above lake Ringedalsvatnet, and it's Norway's most demanding iconic hike. This is not a quick photo stop: the classic route is a **20-kilometre round trip taking 7–12 hours**, with over 1,000 metres of ascent. Get it right and it's the adventure of the trip; get it wrong and it's a genuinely dangerous day. Here's everything you need to hike Trolltunga safely and well.

### Key facts

- ~20 km round trip, ~1,000 m ascent, **7–12 hours** — demanding
- The rock tongue juts ~700 m above lake Ringedalsvatnet
- Trailhead above **Odda** in Hardanger; P3 car park shortens it ~4 km
- Independent season ~mid-June to mid-September only
- Off-season = guided, crampon-and-snow mountaineering day

## The Trolltunga hike at a glance

From the main **P2 (Skjeggedal)** car park, the standard trail is about **20 km there and back** with roughly **1,000 m of climbing**. Most fit hikers take **8–10 hours**; slower groups 12. It is graded **demanding** — no technical scrambling, but a long, relentless mountain route over rock, bog and (early/late season) snow. A higher car park, **P3 (Mågelitopp)**, shortens the walk by around 4 km when its toll road is open, taking a big bite out of the effort.

This is the top rung of Norway's "big three" cliff hikes. If you're not sure you're ready, start with the far gentler [Preikestolen](https://ritzyme.com/preikestolen-pulpit-rock-complete-hiking-guide/) and build up through our [hiking-by-level guide](https://ritzyme.com/hiking-in-norway-trails-for-every-level/).

## Where is Trolltunga and how to get there

Trolltunga sits above the village of **Odda**, at the end of the **Sørfjord** arm of the Hardangerfjord, in western Norway. It's reachable by car or bus from Bergen (around 3 hours) or Oslo (around 6). Base yourself in **Odda, Tyssedal or Skjeggedal** the night before — an early start is non-negotiable. Because it's in Hardanger country, it pairs naturally with a [Hardangerfjord fjord day](https://ritzyme.com/discover-the-best-fjord-tours-in-norway-2024-guide/) to bookend the effort.

## When can you hike Trolltunga?

| Period | Status |
| --- | --- |
| **Mid-Jun – mid-Sep** | **Main season** — hike independently without a guide (conditions permitting) |
| **Mid-Sep – mid-Jun** | Snow/ice on the trail — **guided hike strongly advised or required**; winter is a serious mountaineering day |

Outside the summer window the route holds snow well into the season, daylight shrinks, and people get into trouble every year by underestimating it. If in doubt, hire a guide — see our [month-by-month guide](https://ritzyme.com/best-time-to-visit-norway-month-by-month-guide/) for conditions.

## How hard is Trolltunga, really?

Hard. The distance and elevation put it beyond casual walkers — you need to be comfortable on your feet for a full, strenuous day. The most common mistakes are **starting too late**, **carrying too little water and food**, and **underestimating the weather**, which can swing from sun to cold rain within the day. There is **no phone signal** for most of the route and no facilities beyond the car park.

**Start by 7–8am at the latest.** Rangers turn back late starters in shoulder season for good reason: you do not want to be finishing the descent in the dark. An early start also means you reach the tongue before the midday queue — yes, there's often a line for *the* photo.

## What to pack for Trolltunga

- **Proper hiking boots** with ankle support and grip — this is not a trainers trail.
- **Full layers and a waterproof shell** — see our [Norway packing guide](https://ritzyme.com/what-to-pack-for-norway-in-every-season/).
- **2–3 litres of water and plenty of food** — there's nothing on the mountain.
- **Headlamp, map/GPS, and a power bank** — no signal, long day.
- **Hat and gloves even in July** — the plateau is cold and exposed.

## Camping and the sunrise photo

Under Norway's **right to roam**, you can wild-camp responsibly along the trail — many hikers pitch near the tongue to catch it at sunrise or sunset with almost no one around. It splits the distance over two days and turns the hike into a genuine expedition. Bring a proper cold-weather setup and leave no trace. If that's beyond your kit, the day-hike-from-Odda approach is the standard.

## Stay in Odda the night before Trolltunga

- [Odda hotels on Booking.com](https://www.tkqlhce.com/click-101840831-11795693?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fcity%2Fno%2Fodda.en-gb.html): Sleep in Odda the night before Trolltunga and you can be on the trail at dawn, ahead of the crowds and the heat.

Guided Trolltunga trips (including sunrise and Via Ferrata variants) run from Odda in summer and are the safest way to tackle it in shoulder season — well worth it if you're new to Norwegian mountains.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does the Trolltunga hike take?

The classic route from the P2 car park is about 20 km round trip with roughly 1,000 m of climbing, taking most fit hikers 8–10 hours (up to 12 for slower groups). The higher P3 car park, when open, shortens it by around 4 km.

### How hard is the Trolltunga hike?

Demanding. There's no technical climbing, but it's a long, strenuous full-day mountain route over rock and bog. The main dangers are starting too late, carrying too little water and food, and underestimating the weather. There's no phone signal for most of it.

### When can you hike Trolltunga without a guide?

Roughly mid-June to mid-September, conditions permitting. Outside that window the trail holds snow and ice, daylight is short, and a guide is strongly advised or required — winter Trolltunga is a serious mountaineering undertaking.

### Is Trolltunga worth it?

For fit, prepared hikers, absolutely — it's one of Europe's most spectacular hikes. If a 10-hour mountain day doesn't appeal, Preikestolen delivers a similar iconic-cliff reward for a fraction of the effort.
