Midnight Sun in Norway: Where & When to See It

The summer sun that never sets: where and when to catch 24-hour daylight in Arctic Norway, the best places to live it at midnight, and how to actually sleep through it.

For a few weeks each summer, the sun simply refuses to set: above the Arctic Circle in Norway, it circles the sky around the clock and midnight looks like early evening. The midnight sun is one of the planet's strangest, most joyful natural phenomena — hiking at 1am, kayaking in golden light at midnight, a whole region running on borrowed daylight. Here's exactly where and when to experience it, and what 24-hour daylight actually feels like.

What is the midnight sun?

North of the Arctic Circle (66.5°N), the Earth's tilt means that around midsummer the sun stays above the horizon 24 hours a day — it dips low toward the north at "night" but never sets. The further north you go, the longer the period lasts: a single day at the Arctic Circle itself, stretching to over two months at the North Cape. It's the summer mirror image of the winter polar night.

When can you see the midnight sun in Norway?

PlaceLatitudeMidnight sun period (approx.)
Arctic Circle (Saltfjellet)66.5°N~12 Jun – 1 Jul
Bodø67°N~2 Jun – 10 Jul
Lofoten68°N~27 May – 17 Jul
Tromsø69°N~20 May – 22 Jul
North Cape71°N~14 May – 29 Jul

Late May through mid-July is the reliable window across Arctic Norway, peaking around the summer solstice (~21 June). Even below the Arctic Circle — in Bergen or Oslo — high summer brings "white nights" where it never gets properly dark, though the sun does technically set.

Best places to experience the midnight sun

  • Lofoten & Senja — midnight sun over jagged peaks and beaches; arguably the most beautiful setting. See our Senja guide.
  • Tromsø — the easiest Arctic city to reach, with midnight-sun boat trips, cable-car views and hikes.
  • The North Cape (Nordkapp) — mainland Europe's symbolic top, with the longest midnight-sun season.
  • The Hurtigruten coastal voyage — sail through it; the summer sailings are built around it (our coastal voyage guide).
  • Any Arctic hike or kayak — the real magic is doing things at midnight.
💡

Do a midnight activity. The phenomenon lands hardest when you're active in it: a midnight summit hike, a fjord kayak at 11pm, or a cable-car ride for the low golden light. The colours between 10pm and 2am — endless soft "golden hour" — are unlike anything at lower latitudes.

The catch: sleeping in 24-hour daylight

Constant light plays havoc with sleep. Come prepared:

  • A proper eye mask — the single most important item; pack it in your bag.
  • Blackout-friendly accommodation — many Arctic hotels have blackout blinds; confirm when booking.
  • A loose routine — it's easy to lose track of time and over-do it; keep roughly normal hours.

What to pack and expect

Midnight sun ≠ heat. Arctic summer days are pleasant (often 12–20°C) but the "nights," though bright, are cool, and coastal weather is changeable. Layers and a shell are still essential — the three-layer system in our packing guide covers it. Mosquitoes can be present inland in high summer, so bring repellent for lake and forest areas.

Midnight sun or northern lights?

They're opposite seasons — you can't have both on one trip. Choose midnight sun (late May–mid July) for warm-ish hiking, endless daylight and green landscapes; choose northern lights (late Sep–March) for aurora and snow. Both are best in the same far-north places. Decide with our month-by-month guide, then read the aurora guide if winter wins.

Frequently asked questions

When can you see the midnight sun in Norway?

From roughly late May to mid-July above the Arctic Circle, peaking around the summer solstice (~21 June). Tromsø has it ~20 May–22 July, Lofoten ~27 May–17 July, and the North Cape from mid-May to late July.

Where is the best place to see the midnight sun in Norway?

Lofoten and Senja for midnight sun over dramatic peaks, Tromsø as the easiest Arctic city to reach, the North Cape for the longest season, or the Hurtigruten coastal voyage to sail through it. The magic is doing an activity — a hike or kayak — at midnight.

How do you sleep during the midnight sun?

Bring a proper eye mask (the single most useful item), choose accommodation with blackout blinds, and keep a roughly normal routine — constant daylight makes it easy to over-do it and lose track of time.

Is the midnight sun warm?

Not especially — Arctic summer days are pleasant (often 12–20°C) but the bright 'nights' are cool and coastal weather changes fast. Layers and a waterproof shell are still essential, and inland areas can have mosquitoes.
